Radley grimaces. "Yikes. Being here in the Pokemon World must be a huge change from all that."

To say the least.

[noamuth]

"It is a very great change," she agrees. "I count myself lucky that the others from my world who are here are drow I already knew to be allies, more or less."

[crystalmaster]

"That's definitely a good thing," Radley winces. "So are they your friends or ... ?"

[noamuth]

Vierna laughs. "Jarlaxle is perhaps the only drow I have ever heard call another friend and mean it," she points out. "And I suspect he claims me as such mostly because he was very close to my father."

[crystalmaster]

"Genuine friends aren't usually a thing in drow culture?" Radley frowns. It makes sense with what he's been told, but it's sad to him anyway.

[noamuth]

She shrugs. "People always have their own agendas. It's foolish to extend too much trust," she explains, as if this is just common sense. "If Jarlaxle is prone to sentimentality, it is because he is a deft enough opportunist that it places him at less risk than it would most of us."

[crystalmaster]

"Yeah, there's a lot of people like that in human culture too," Radley agrees. "But sometimes the only opportunity we want is companionship, even though it's a risk."

[noamuth]

"You really would not last a ten-day in Menzoberranzan," she sighs, although there is more fondness in her voice than anything else. Perhaps Radley's attitudes about friendship are a little contagious.

[crystalmaster]

"Hmm, maybe," he muses. "I survived being around a lot of the nasty-wasty humans."

Although it isn't something he wants to repeat.

[noamuth]

Vierna frowns. She doesn't think he understands - which is surely partly her own doing, she's always been a little bit careful not to show him too many of the sharp edges her upbringing left her with. She's not even sure why she does it, save that she does enjoy his company. She's not ashamed of her Menzoberranyr sensibilities, but neither does she relish the idea of frightening him away. (Is he a friend? Abbil, not abban? Is she now the kind of person who has friends?)

But somehow, in her family's chapel - or a close facsimile - it frustrates her that he wouldn't understand. "Radley, I mean no slight when I say I doubt it's comparable." She turns and points at the spider-shaped sacrificial altar. "Twenty-seven years ago, I tied my father to that table so that my mother could put the sacrificial dagger in his heart. If I had hesitated, I am certain that she would have taken that as evidence that I, and my youngest brother, ought to be destroyed as well."

[crystalmaster]

Radley stares at her in horror at this.

"... Yeah, I haven't run into any current human cultures like that."

There might have been some in the past, though. He wouldn't put it past some of the ancient cultures that demanded human sacrifice.

He steps farther back from the altar, not sure what to even say. He doesn't want to be rude about someone's culture when he cares about them, but ... yikes.

"... If that hadn't been a concern, would you have still done it?" he asks instead.

[noamuth]

Vierna's a little taken aback by that; it's not a question she's ever given much thought to. "...No. Some members of our House, perhaps, but not Zaknafein."

Radley smiles a bit sadly. "Yeah, that's what I thought. You're not the type."
