[Mando crouches a little and opens his arms.]

Climb aboard.

I guess you won't let me try it on my own, huh?

[He clambers into Mando's arms, wrapping one arm around his neck, his tail coming up to wrap around Mando's thigh.]

You're not heavy enough to control it.

[The jetpack is built for Mando, who is much, much bigger and heavier than Riz. If Riz tried using it, it would fling him all over the sky.]

Hold on.

[Once Riz is settled and Mando has a good grip on him, Mando triggers the jetpack and they shoot straight up like a rocket.]

[That's a fair remark. Riz doesn't know exactly how much this thing weighs, but he's willing to bet it weighs more than he does.

So, he does as instructed and gets himself, if not completely comfortable, then at least very secure in Mando's arms. And then they are off, literally rocketing upwards faster than Riz has ever gone before. He's gone fast on the Hangman, sure, but that was always behind the cover of Fabian's wide back (and he's not sure if the Hangman goes this quick anyway). And Adaine has cast fly on him too, but even then, he was limited by how quick he could move. It's nothing like this, with the wind whipping at his face and his stomach completely weightless and--

His hat is a trusty, loyal sort, but it absolutely was not meant to withstand speeds like this. So there it goes. Goodbye.]

My hat!

[Riz's voice is barely audible over the wind, and okay, he knows better than to reach for it, but goddamnit, he likes that hat!]

[If Riz was in his human form, Mando might consider letting him give the jetpack a try. Might. But when he's in his true form, Riz is far too small to handle it.]

[There's also the timeless of wisdom of "don't let a teenager play with your expensive mechanical toys, unless you're willing to replace said toys when said teenager wrecks them." Mando's got a limited amount of time to use his jetpack, and he'd rather not waste it piecing the thing back together.]

[Mando notices when the hat goes flying--really, he should've predicted this, and had Riz take it off, but Mando's helmet sits very securely and he's unfamiliar with the ways of hats. He stops their upward ascent with a bone-rattling jerk, and then they're diving, going after the hat as it wafts towards the ground.]

Grab it!

[Fortunately, Mando can tuck everything in and make himself aerodynamic, and they're gaining on the lost hat.]

[Even in human form, Riz weighs about as much as an anorexic squirrel, so he'd probably still go shooting off to gods know where.

Anyone sensible probably would've just let the hat fall to the ground. Or get a new one, but listen. Riz really likes his hat. So when Mando goes into a steep dive to chase after it, he doesn't protest or scream, instead going into full focus mode, freeing one hand and keeping it at the ready. His breath practically stills in his chest as they shoot towards the ground, his eyes fixed only on the flapping fabric of his hat, and then when they are finally close enough, his hand shoots out and he grabs it, crushing it to his chest.]

Pull up, pull up!

[Okay, he is screaming now.]

[Yeah, Riz would need his own jetpack, specially formatted for his weight, and Mando doesn't have the know-how to make him one. He'll have to be satisfied with zipping around together.]

[Mando has been paying attention to their descent, and is very much aware of how close they are to the ground. If they'd gotten much closer, he'd have left the hat to fall to the ground and descended much, much more slowly to just pick it up. But they manage to get it in air, and the moment Riz snatches it, Mando is levelling them up and out of their dive, zooming in a long, parabolic arc against the sky.]

[Mando is laughing inside his helmet.]

[Riz tucks his hat under his arm, pinning it tightly to his body as he clutches onto Mando. The wind whips through his curls and makes his ears flap slightly. It's not an unfamiliar sensation. It's like being on a rollercoaster, or being on back of the Hangman, or hell, even hurtling through the air after your friends insane devil-pirate-dad shot you out of a canon.

Except way faster than at least two of those things.]

Fabian would be so jealous right now. The Hangman isn't nearly this fast.

[He is still shouting. He isn't sure if Mando can hear him otherwise.]
