Log:

As night falls on the final day of an excellent beach prom adventure, the staff of Resort Gorgeous usher their guests out onto the beach for one last grand sight to top off the experience. Big, fluffy resort towels have been laid out for people and Pokemon alike to sit on, and locals are off to the sides, handling large and beautiful kites with incredible care. They come in all shapes and sizes, and each depicts a Pokemon you may have seen wandering the shores or swimming in the oceans during your time here. They're incredible works of art all on their own, and as the wind picks up, watching them lift off into the sky becomes an artistic experience in and of itself.

A hush falls over the gathered audience as the kites sail up, up, up into the sky. Small children begin to release lanterns that float up to join them, and the kites dance around them in practiced loops and twirls. In turn, they are illuminated from all angles, a play of shadow and color in the dark, starry night.

But as the show goes on, it starts to become apparent that starlight and lanterns... are not the only things lighting up the night sky.

A growing point of electric blue light that might have been overlooked at first among the rest of the stars becomes brighter and brighter, and bigger and bigger, quickly becoming what is clearly a long and jagged tunnel opening up in the middle of the sky over the island, accompanied by a sound like a clap of thunder.

There's barely enough time to react to the opening of space before, like bees from a hive, ghostly white creatures emerge, at least two dozen of them, drifting serenely down in the direction of the beach-- and, unfortunately, right towards the show, even as the locals gasp in shock and try to pull their kites in.

"What in the world is that?" one person cries out.

"Where did they come from?" shouts another.

But the biggest, most obvious reactions come from the wild Pokemon in the area.

Frightened Wingull take off in enormous clouds from their cliffside nests and scatter to the winds, the sea grows choppy with fish Pokemon of all kinds poking out from the waves to examine the bright light only to splash hurriedly back down, and even the Pyukumuku try to roll themselves back into the ocean, expelling their innards to help pull them across the sand. The landbound wild Pokemon don’t have the ocean or the sky to retreat to, and begin to swarm and stampede in their efforts to either find somewhere to get away from the strange, unnerving creatures...or stand their ground and attempt to fight them. The reaction from the wild Pokemon is so strong, in fact, that the strange creatures seem to panic themselves, jittering this way and that, only for some to get tangled in the strings of the retreating kites. Once ensnared, they start to emit an unsettling cry as they struggle to get free, lashing out with their tentacles at anything that comes near as they come tumbling slowly through the air towards the ground.

It’s chaos on the beach. Some locals try to yank their kites free, or send out their own Pokemon to try and defend themselves. Others run, scooping up children and Pokemon and yelling for others to do the same. Wild Pokemon are flapping and scampering everywhere, so panicky that they’re having a hard time telling friend from foe. The strange creatures are floating all around, lost and fighting with trained and wild Pokemon alike. But the question is...what will you do?

... Well. This is certainly something. And while Sion is surprised by these strange creatures, it's, well, it's not exactly a sort of thing he's never dealt with before. Having to deal with attempted incursions by goddesses from another dimension and their minions means this isn't entirely unfamiliar territory. At least these ones aren't inside his head too--

Which means his team are all out of their pokeballs and and being given calm, if urgent directions. Of course, Sion can feel that sense of sheer power as well as anyone, so he's initially avoiding direct confrontation, instead sending his 'mons to protect people and property that seem to be in danger. He's watching the strange creatures intently though, trying to get an idea of their behavior, attack patterns, potential weaknesses.

Except, that as he watches, he notices something...

"... They almost seem to be acting in a panic more than anything," he mutters.

Ah. This is gonna suck, isn't it.

These things are certainly a surprise, don't get him wrong. And surprise new creatures around here are always interesting. It's just he can feel that powerful aura, and it feels much too familiar for his liking. This world was supposed to be free of things like Alpha or the goddesses, right? It's supposed to be a peaceful place without that crap.

It's almost enough to make him want to walk away to go take a nap and not deal with it. Years ago, he might have done just that.

Half of his team goes to help try to direct the wild Pokemon fleeing the area, after a meaningful glance but no actual words given. Aran is clinging to Ryner's shoulder fearfully, and Jehra - the first of his team to notice the moment the wormhole opened, of course he would be - is refusing to leave his side.

(Shira is more focused than he ever has been on one of the mysterious creatures, staring it down intently. ...That's odd for him, considering he never focuses long on anything larger than a sock, but it's something to ponder later.)

...But Ryner has noticed the same thing as Sion, as he watches at Sion's side. "Yeah, you're right. Whatever they are, they don't really seem like they have any kind of goal in mind. They're just lashing out at whatever gets too close."

"They're getting tangled with the kites, as well," Sion observes, then turns Ospyre, who's been waiting for instructions. "Do you think you can cut them loose without getting too close?" he asks the talonflame, who nods and takes off to give it a shot.

"If we're lucky, perhaps freeing them will allow them to return to wherever they've come from..."

And if they're not, well, Sion has experience dealing with otherworldly threats.

"It's worth a shot, at least," Ryner agrees, looking down at Jehra. "Mind helping out with that?"

Jehra is hesitant, but eventually follows after Ospyre.

Leaving Ryner to idly reach for his pokegear. "Gotta say, I was kind of hoping that something bothersome like this wouldn't happen this time around..."

"It would be nice, wouldn't it?"

Then again, it's starting to reach the point where Sion doesn't dare turn down an invitation to one of these events solely because of the possibility that his help may be needed.

That, and the libraries. And legendary pokemon occasionally appearing.

The libraries are pretty worth it, that's true. (Not that Rose would ever let Ryner decline any of these anyway, so he's become resigned to it in a way.)

"I guess we're just not allowed nice things," he grumbles in his habitual way as, without having to look at what he's doing, he opens his 'gear and raises it to snap a photo of one of the giant jellyfish things. For research purposes later. It's not like he trusts that the local scientists will make anything public, after all. "Not that that's anything new."

(Fuji would likely be proud of how steady his shot is.)

"Do you think it's something inherent in staging large events of this sort that attracts such phenomena?" Sion muses while watching the pokemon go to work, occasionally signalling further instructions.

"That would be our luck, if that has something to do with it," is Ryner's reply. "Then again, May and November seem to always happen no matter how scattered everyone is, so that can't be all of it."
