AN EXCITING END TO THE DAY

Log:

As night falls on the final day of an excellent beach prom adventure, the staff of Resort Gorgeous usher their guests out onto the beach for one last grand sight to top off the experience. Big, fluffy resort towels have been laid out for people and Pokemon alike to sit on, and locals are off to the sides, handling large and beautiful kites with incredible care. They come in all shapes and sizes, and each depicts a Pokemon you may have seen wandering the shores or swimming in the oceans during your time here. They're incredible works of art all on their own, and as the wind picks up, watching them lift off into the sky becomes an artistic experience in and of itself.

A hush falls over the gathered audience as the kites sail up, up, up into the sky. Small children begin to release lanterns that float up to join them, and the kites dance around them in practiced loops and twirls. In turn, they are illuminated from all angles, a play of shadow and color in the dark, starry night.

But as the show goes on, it starts to become apparent that starlight and lanterns... are not the only things lighting up the night sky.

A growing point of electric blue light that might have been overlooked at first among the rest of the stars becomes brighter and brighter, and bigger and bigger, quickly becoming what is clearly a long and jagged tunnel opening up in the middle of the sky over the island, accompanied by a sound like a clap of thunder.

There's barely enough time to react to the opening of space before, like bees from a hive, ghostly white creatures emerge, at least two dozen of them, drifting serenely down in the direction of the beach-- and, unfortunately, right towards the show, even as the locals gasp in shock and try to pull their kites in.

"What in the world is that?" one person cries out.

"Where did they come from?" shouts another.

But the biggest, most obvious reactions come from the wild Pokemon in the area.

Frightened Wingull take off in enormous clouds from their cliffside nests and scatter to the winds, the sea grows choppy with fish Pokemon of all kinds poking out from the waves to examine the bright light only to splash hurriedly back down, and even the Pyukumuku try to roll themselves back into the ocean, expelling their innards to help pull them across the sand. The landbound wild Pokemon don’t have the ocean or the sky to retreat to, and begin to swarm and stampede in their efforts to either find somewhere to get away from the strange, unnerving creatures...or stand their ground and attempt to fight them. The reaction from the wild Pokemon is so strong, in fact, that the strange creatures seem to panic themselves, jittering this way and that, only for some to get tangled in the strings of the retreating kites. Once ensnared, they start to emit an unsettling cry as they struggle to get free, lashing out with their tentacles at anything that comes near as they come tumbling slowly through the air towards the ground.

It’s chaos on the beach. Some locals try to yank their kites free, or send out their own Pokemon to try and defend themselves. Others run, scooping up children and Pokemon and yelling for others to do the same. Wild Pokemon are flapping and scampering everywhere, so panicky that they’re having a hard time telling friend from foe. The strange creatures are floating all around, lost and fighting with trained and wild Pokemon alike. But the question is...what will you do?

[Bettina winces, grimacing - totally did not mean to send the attack that way, darn it. She's careful to dive down and through the mess to check on the Pokemon who were almost in the crossfire. You guys alright?

Jane would smile in exasperation if she had enough confidence in any of this resolving peacefully. She turns at the sound of someone speaking up, though.]

Um, well - they're caught in the kites, right? Maybe if they're not caught, they'll calm down. At the very least, if they're calm, we might be able to do something other than panicking...
islandshore: (RIKU used LEER!)

That's... probably a better route to take, honestly.

[He rubs his neck, and Ultima drifts closer to the two to try and ward off incoming attacks. Meanwhile, Flare's in Mega Charizard X form, dropping some Rock Slide not as an attack but to form a bit of a barrier. Better safe than sorry, after all.]

It looks like they came out of some kinda portal... Wonder if there's a way we can redirect them back there? Though I'm not sure how receptive they'll be with all this panic going on.
cyan_maid: (You are EMBARRASSING me!)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2018-04-22 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, if you get enough people and Pokemon working together to funnel them in one direction, it might work? But...

[But it could be seen as a united attack at the same time. She frowns, shaking her head.]

Has anything like that ever turned up before?
islandshore: (yeah right)

[personal profile] islandshore 2018-04-24 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not exactly, but we've had some similar incidents. Blocks of pixels that turned the whole place into a lifeless video game with creepy music. A monstrous enemy in a nightmare castle after everyone wound up sucked into a dream world...

Oh, and plenty of legendary attacks.

[He shrugs his shoulders, glancing at the sky again.]

But I think maybe this is a case where we should fight smarter and not harder. Maybe aiming attacks around them instead of at them?
cyan_maid: (Haha! That's brilliant!)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2018-04-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Not too close to hit them, but close enough to coerce them into a specific direction!

[Bettina's been listening this whole time, and she looks back up at the otherworldly jellies, frowning slightly. Can she do that thing? Hm...]
islandshore: (determined)

sorry for lateness- busy week!

[personal profile] islandshore 2018-05-06 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Weaker attacks might do the trick, too- stuff that could startle. A Thundershock instead of a Thunderbolt. Maybe Whirlwind and Roar?

[He sighing, he brings a hand over his face.]

Shoulda brought Highwind with me, but I honestly didn't anticipate something like this.

[While Riku contemplates, Flare offers a thumbs up to Bettina. Just hang in there! This is messed up, but they've got a job to do.]
cyan_maid: (Eheh...)

it's alright, I know the feeling

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2018-05-06 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Things that can push them back or get them to retreat, but not especially harm!

[Mmmmrrrh...Bettina frowns, brow furrowed. The expression is startlingly hilarious on a Crobat.]
islandshore: (unsure)

[personal profile] islandshore 2018-05-07 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... Think we could get away with some statuses, too? Confusion sounds like a nice idea in theory, but...

[Well, would confused squids really be any easier to wrangle?

His brow wrinkles and he grumbles to himself. Meanwhile, Flare continues to make low rumbles and gestures of assurance...

Which are soon "enhanced" by Riku's sunglasses-wearing Blastoise sliding in with a loud roar and jets of water shooting out in a show of enthusiasm...

And striking some of the weird Ultra Beasties. This... may just serve to agitate them more. Because if there's one thing Zen lacks, it's foresight.]
cyan_maid: (Oooh lookie here)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2018-05-07 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Confusion might end up making things worse. If we go for statuses, maybe...paralyze or sleep?

[Bettina just. Blinks. And then takes one of her wings and presses it to her forehead. Oh geez.]
islandshore: (determined)

[personal profile] islandshore 2018-05-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Paralysis sounds good. Burn might weaken their attacks a bit.

[Flare blinks a few times at that, then nods, turning around to try and land a Will-O-Wisp on one of the now irritated jellies. Thanks, Zen. You're a pal. Really.]

Oh, hey! Actually, flying types could be crucial here. They could sorta... fly at those jellyfish. Startle them, but not strike.

[He sends a glance to Bettina as it crosses his mind. Meanwhile, Zen continues grumbling and rumbling and spouting the equivalent of cheesy anime monologues.

Please pardon her... misguided efforts, you poor bat.]
cyan_maid: (Huh?! With blush)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2018-05-08 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
They'd have to be careful not to get in range of those tentacles, but...Bettina, do you think you could do that?

[The Crobat peeks over her wing at Jane, then glances back up to the jellies. She shrugs. It's worth a shot, right?]

Hm...well, there's no better way to know something than to test it out.
islandshore: (RIKU used LEER!)

[personal profile] islandshore 2018-05-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. Flare, Crush- you provide backup, all right?

[Though his Hydreigon whimpers a little, he nods all the same, while Flare gives the Charizard equivalent of a thumbs up before swiveling toward their jelly-like foes.]

I feel like staggering the strikes would be the best bet. If they all go at once, it'll probably make them too suspicious. Or too stressed out.

[Which would be counterproductive if they're out to wrangle some jellies.]
