The dog days aren't quite over yet...

Who: Everyone participating in the Dog Days of Summer event!
Where: Mt Mortar, the Bell Tower, OR the Seafoam Islands
When: August 17th-31st
Summary: With the Legendary Beasts running amok, it's up to everyone to help figure out what's wrong and get everything back to normal!
Log:

Bell Tower

Volunteers helping at the Bell Tower will arrive in Ecruteak City and be welcomed into the Bell Tower-- the normally-reclusive monks are still fairly stiff, but in the interest of not driving off the very help they asked for, they will be much more accommodating than usual.

Little studies have been set up all over the archive rooms in the upper floors, allowing volunteers to group up at tables and pore over old tomes and scrolls for any information that might be related to Ho-Oh or the three Beasts-- of course, there’s also a wealth of information about legendary Pokemon from other regions… just don’t let the monks catch you getting off-topic!

Gym Leader Morty will also be present helping with the research, and is using his Indigo League funds to finance inn lodgings in town for all volunteers. As for refreshments, local restaurants have also stepped up, eager to provide free food for all volunteer researchers! Gogoat-drawn carts full of fresh, traditional cuisine will come trundling up to the Tower several times a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)-- often accompanied by the restaurant-owners themselves. The guy who runs ECRUTEAK HOUSE OF DUMPLINGS will be there a lot-- he and his Emboar are particularly bombastic about stuffing everybody full of delicious fried dumplings at every opportunity. Gotta stay well-fed if you want to study!

That said, anyone wishing to pull an all-nighter will either have to bring their own snacks or rely on the monks’ supplies-- which means plain rice, hot tea, and not much else.

----

Mt Mortar

The base of Mt. Mortar is a flurry of activity no matter what the hour-- the center of operations is a large camping area at the foot of the mountain, where a small army of tents have been set up. Rangers and volunteers alike are rushing around, and anyone just arriving will be asked to sign in and mark whatever tasks they’ll be helping with.

Strong trainers can sign up for field work, which can involve anything from patrolling the mountain to evacuate campers to helping corral the panicking wild Pokemon population (bright side: there’s even more rare ones running around than normal, and capturing them is a quick and easy way to get them out of harm’s way!). Trainers with flying types may even wind up helping to carry water over from the Lake of Rage in case of what the Rangers all fear: forest fire.

More inexperienced trainers will lower-leveled Pokemon will be encouraged to stick around base where it’s a little safer-- but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of work to be done! Several meal tents are set up around the base, where you can serve (or be served) quick meals from hot pans, soup kitchen style. Nothing fancy or extravagant, but nothing that won’t taste great after a long hectic day of running around the mountain. And hey, it’s free.

A first-aid tent is also set up where trainers and their Pokemon can have injuries patched up-- the Nurse Joys staffing it can always use assistance to keep up with everything.

Sleeping quarters are provided via cot-filled tents set up around the base-- those ones are first-come, first-serve, so grab one fast! Helping the Rangers out is an all-day-all-night affair, so everyone just sleeps and eats when they get the chance to. Reminders to do both on a regular basis are posted all around-- nobody wants sleep-deprived trainers doing dangerous work, even if, between the constant roars of Raikou and Entei and the constant activity within the camp, sleeping could get pretty difficult.

Fortunately, one of the first things you’ll be handed upon arriving is a pair of heavy-duty earplugs.

Seafoam Islands

On the shores of the Seafoam Islands, everything is… well, chaos.

The beaches are COVERED in tents of all shapes, sizes, and… raggedness. It seems many folks have shown up in lieu of Greg’s frantic video post, and they’ve more or less taken over. You can barely see the sand! Things are quite a bit less organized than they are over at Mt. Mortar, which unfortunately means that for food and first-aid, you might need to wind up heading over to the teeny tiny little dock town with the inn (booked solid, sorry!) and the shop (Blaine’s beach is less occupied, but he can be seen from time to time passive-aggressively picking up peoples’ trash around the outskirts of the tent army and scowling).

Because out on the beach, there’s no first-aid to speak of and if you go to the ‘food tent’, you’ll just be handed something like this.

Fortunately, unlike their hilariously futile efforts to find Celebi and aside from their clear lack of event-managing knowledge, it seems the Seekers actually are onto something. Every six hours or so, Articuno, Zapdos, or Moltres CAN be seen soaring high overhead and disappearing around the back of the mountain, often with stolen food or shiny things glinting in their talons.

The Seekers themselves are more concerned with getting all their equipment functioning than they are about accommodating all the tourists who just showed up to sit on the beach and stare at the horizon in hopes of seeing one of the Birds-- but if you can actually find them in the chaos, they’ll eagerly put you to work.

In this case, 'work' means 'heading straight into the caves to try and #FindLugia'. Well? WILL YOU?

foolishwren: but then I'd have to go to super mega turbo hell for homos and i'm not quite out of my closet yet (well i COULD admit this is hot)

"Yeah. As I understand it, Legendary Pokemon are usually capable of good AND bad."

She hadn't met the Beasts before, but to say she was completely unfamiliar with the havoc they could wreak would be... well, inaccurate.

"I've definitely seen both in my ti-- oh."

And that's right about when Gloom rises from the darkness. Heather doesn't startle, exactly, just takes a step back, warily.

Walter watched her step back a little confused. And then realised. but why would she be put off by Gloom? Of all his Pokemon, even against some of the non-Ghost ones, she was one of the more friendly and mild ones to encounter. He turned his head to check and yes; she was just smiling at Heather, one ghostly hand on his shoulder and the other waving in a harmless gesture.

"...This is Gloom. She is one of my Pokemon, and very tame." Thinking that would be enough to placate her, he continued. "You've seen legendary Pokemon act before?"

She's not about to be a jerk to a Pokemon that isn't doing anything wrong, even if it's a Ghost-type. REALISTICALLY, she knows that not every ghost is going to be a Slightly.

But her metaphorical hackles go up whether she wants them to or not.

She flashes a hasty smile at the friendly Haunter all the same before returning to Walter's question.

"Yeah, a bunch of times. Sometimes it seemed like they were there to help, and other times, they were... well, the problem."

She tries to think back to last time the Beasts were out and about... not a whole lot comes to mind except the side effects, which were... hardly their fault. But it sure had been something, having Entei's fire in her blood.

... And that had been the summer she'd tried to kill Claudia.

"There was this one time when three giant... robot-like ones were just walking through the continent. Destroying basically everything they touched like it was nothing. But another time, one interrupted a massive fight between two others and helped everybody who'd been trying to stop the conflict."

As it was Gloom remained by Walter, sort of leaning on his shoulder and smiling as she listened, taking in all this new information from this new person.

Walter took it in, adding something to his notes. "So they can be destructive or they can be helpful. They do not follow a pattern, or a cause..." Unpredictable. And given the legendary Pokemon's powers, it made them immensely dangerous. They did not serve humanity and they did not have an order to their behaviour. Not that he could see. From what he knew, the monks had asked them here to study Ho-oh, the creature that had revived them, in the hope it will control what it had created. But what if they were obeying Ho-oh already? Why would Ho-oh seek to help them in this, when it had not come already? It was not dead, like God was back home.

"So it is possible, that we will summon Ho-oh, and this will have been it's intent. Or that it will not care what is happening."

From behind him, Claudia stepped forward and jumped up to the table, settling by his arm. He reached out and touched her back, lightly petting her. As he mused, the Cinccino carefully picked her way forward, taking the Luxury Ball in it's paws and very slowly, eyes on him to watch for any sudden notice, slipping it into his bag.
foolishwren: would be a shame if someone gave her a propeller hat so large that she just flew away (what a small child)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2017-09-23 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
She shrugs.

"I couldn't tell you a thing about Ho-Oh specifically... I've never seen it, that's why I was curious enough to come here. There's... just so much we don't know. They're gods but they're also Pokemon. They're not on our level, they're somewhere beyond that-- and they pretty clearly have their own way of doing things that doesn't always neatly mesh with ours."

A pattern, a cause, she has no idea if it's 'random' or if there is a higher logic. But "gods" being uncaring and violent is something she was used to long before she got here-- and the wild deities of this world are far more palatable, even if they have baffled and frustrated her.

How do you analyze the behavior of beings that are so rarely seen that people still argue about whether they're real or not even when they DO appear brazenly before you?

She folds her arms thoughtfully and leans back against the opposite table-- and it's then that she notices the furry little rodent messing with Walter's bag.

"... Oh, hey."

No reason to think it's not one of Walter's Pokemon, especially since it's putting something... IN the bag, rather than snatching it and running off or something.

Walter frowned as he listened to her. So they had no idea if this summoning would help or not. And these Pokemon could very easily cause such havoc...he was glad that, from the moment he had arrived, he had poured effort into raising his Pokemon to be strong. Maybe if he kept training them, they would be able to protect him from even these creatures. He stroked Claudia's fur.

But then he looked at saw the Cinccino. Who froze and quickly jumped from his bag, paws on her hips. He frowned and picked up his bag, pulling it onto his lap.
"Where is your trainer?" He asked it. The Cinccino fussed with her scarf, not answering him. Claudia touched his arm with a soft call. He frowned at his Vulpix, then looked at Heather.
"Is it yours?" Apparently Heather's Pokemon have slipped things to him before. Was this another case of that? He opened his bag to look at what it had put in there and found...a black and red Pokeball. he'd never purchased Luxury Balls before, so this was not his.
foolishwren: SCORE (... oh shit I found a bag of Milky Ways!)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2017-09-25 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
There had been a time when Heather had felt combative towards the Legendaries. Towards the idea that any being might somehow be responsible for the people who came here and then left.

Then Arceus happened.

Needless to say, she'd needed to... re-evaluate some things after that.

"Nope. Not mine."

She's seen them around, but never had been one to go for the ultra-cuddly-looking. It's definitely a cutie, though.

"It's got a scarf. Maybe it belongs to another trainer in here?"
11121_assumption: (Awkward)

[personal profile] 11121_assumption 2017-09-25 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
The Cinccino hopped up and proudly pointed to the Pokeball Walter was holding, when Heather mentioned her trainer. Walter looked at it, then at her. Claudia patted his arm and nodded at him.

"...This is hers." Both Pokemon nodded and the Cinccino promptly sat by his other arm, leaning on him. Yes this is her trainer. Walter looked down at the scarf Pokemon and tried to move his arm away from her, although that just made her reach out and grab his sleeve with her tiny paws.
"I. I'm not it's trainer..." he explained to Heather, clearly a little embarrassed about this. He was used to ghost type Pokemon choosing to join him. Not random fluff chinchillas that then snuggled up to him.
foolishwren: What is this, FAIL DAY?! (aw come on REALLY?)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2017-09-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this is happening.

Heather shrugs, broadly. It's not the first time she's seen a 'wild' Pokemon just sort of capture itself, but it is the first time she's seen one that's almost certainly belonged to a trainer before do it.

"Well, it certainly seems to think that you are. Maybe... ask one of the monks if they've seen it here before?"
11121_assumption: (Sounds wrong)

[personal profile] 11121_assumption 2017-10-01 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Walter was torn between looked extremely bemused and not that pleased about this. At the mention of the monks he nodded, only for the Cinccino to grab his arm and shake her head stubbornly.

"I'm not... you don't belong to me. Go to your trainer." He handed the luxury ball to her firmly. She pouted and pointedly shoved it back into his hand, folding her little arms. Walter tried again. The Cinccino pushed the ball back. This seemed like this situation was not going to resolve itself anytime soon, given Walter's patience and the Cinccino's determination. Only, the Scarf Pokemon didn't have his patience and decided to settle the matter by shoving the ball back at him again, then trotting to his bag and sitting in it decisively.

He looked at it. Then up at Heather. "...I'm not sure what to do about this."
foolishwren: I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!! (ohmygod danny devito!!!)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2017-10-01 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Another shrug.

"Well, you could battle it and knock it out. But that seems a little mean, don't you think?"

It looks harmless enough.

She kneels, elbows on her knees. No longer addressing Walter, but the chinchilla Pokemon instead.

"You seem pretty determined, huh."
